The Biggest Treasure of All
It is spring time again and wow the pollen is just as bad as ever, but today it does not matter how bad it is . I’m outside looking at the greatest treasure imaginable. I was digging through the yard 2 years ago trying to see if I could find a good place to plant a nice sized tree, we lost six tree in a storm, I know nothing about planting so I blogged until I could find some useful information, and of course people are very kind to give the most detailed information to a person in need, that I even know now what kind of tree thrives in our area.
After deciding what to plant and finding out what part of the yard I wanted to use I began to dig, the soil was a bit dry that year and I started the project with the thought that I could accomplish this task on my own. I soon found out I was in for quite a large task for one person, I employed the help of my 10 and 12 year old sons, to trade off digging for something they really wanted me to do for them. So in return they were only to happy to help, of course the fact that I was baking fresh cookies all the next week was the actual convincing tool I needed. Well the first day of digging we found a rather small car and a Lego , the boys tossed them and just kept digging, the next day we found a GI Joe soldier and of course the boys fought over who he belonged to, the toy was in a tin can so he still looked kind of good, but the fact that he was wearing a Barbie shoe on one foot left my 10 year old to finally fork it over to his brother,(who immediately tossed the shoe and began to search his toy box for a boot).
We were planting one tree when we started this project , but now since the boys were helping me, they wanted their own tree each, so we stopped digging and looked for a few bargains until we could find two trees that were in our budget, they gave up all of their savings to buy the trees, they had been saving for a game that cost almost $70.00 and they had accumulated about $ 42.00 so I was very surprised that they would give it up for the trees, but they had found some thing knew to entertain them. I soon became aware that the reason they wanted to dig the holes, was that they were looking for treasure. I was happy to have the help even if the motivation was not quite what I was expecting.
We had to wet the area at night before bed time to get a couple of feet into the ground and the trees were a great buy, because they were a little distressed, so we planned to get them into the ground by 3:pm the next day In the morning when while we were having breakfast my daughter said that she felt left out of the whole plant your own tree campaign; and well, we were hunting for two more bargain trees after all was said and done, she had already asked her dad to buy two one for her the other for him. I hoped that my other children would be happy with what we had already had, and the buying of trees would not break the bank. I went to get some miracle grow, at the local Home Depot, I heard it really was great for plants in distress so to my surprise my daughter and husband arrived home before me with 4 trees, not 2 trees. My husband said that they were on sale in the distressed area of the nursery so we had to really get busy now, and begin to put these trees in the ground my nineteen year old decided to help and we all began to dig, soon the job was done, but not before all of the parties involved split the treasure, that year we found a steel hammer, a Barbie with one shoe, a tin can with $ 24 in it, a dime store locket that had a picture of a dog in it, and a box with the remains of a bird, by the way no one fought over it.
We also found that we all had a great time that spring together,( we ate a lot of cookies), and drank lemon aide of course. But this morning when we got up for breakfast, and started to bolt out of the door to our busy obligations, we saw the most beautiful blooming Crape Myrtles they were all blooming the trees had all survived (thank to that miracle grow), The best thing was that no one had to fight for this treasure they all smiled and then my10 year old said, ” hey mom that’s a treasure we did’nt even know was there”. He was right we had found the biggest treasure of all.
