Independence Day At Home

Monday, July 6th, 2009

My family and I were invited to a friends property downtown in Houston, for the celebration, we rarely attend anything that requires being stuck in traffic for longer than an hour with the exception of the 4th of July, so we took a couple of coolers and lawn chairs for the big event and much to our surprise we all but missed the traffic, a sign of the time I guess (gas prices) the freeway was more than manageable.

We were centrally located with about 50 other people this friend was very generous to have us all there to be in a safe location and not have to worry about your kids or the bathroom runs or even the food, while we always take snacks on occasions like this we were met with the traditional hot dogs, and much, much more when we got there at about 7 pm. All of the  kids played soccer, or catch or hide and seek and the grownups mingled, the evening was very warm, but there was a escalation of a really nice and cooling breeze that worked its way through the evening.

We had a really nice time and when the fireworks were finally exhibited they were very much worth the wait. I noticed that my kids were taking a video of the fireworks, something I always ask them to do, but something they never remember to do, so I said that I was glad to see that someone had taken on the responsibility of bringing a recorder to do what I almost always have to do.

My 19 year old said that this was a very special day for the traditional Independence Day recording, They had a plan to send it to their cousin who was deployed to Afghanistan a couple of months ago. He is one of those kids that just loves to see the fireworks and usually is the first one to ask you on the first day of June if we are going to go and make plans to get out and see the displays that the city offers to its community. I was elated that they had thought of him, especially since he is in harms way at this time, I can’t think of a better gift than to see that he was thought of on this great day.

I am proud of my nephew who has taken on the very courageous task of  being a soldier, but I am also somewhat afraid of the inevitable escalation that could bring him harm, so we recorded the evening and mailed it off today, and he may get it in an email earlier than that, my son put it on the web for him just in case he has access to it (I hope he does). He would enjoy seeing that we all ate a hot dog in his name and that the fireworks were just as good as ever. Here is a big kiss and hug for all those young people out there in a far far place away from the safety of their own homes, so that we may enjoy ours.

8 Weeks Ago and Counting (My sister In-Law) part two

Monday, July 6th, 2009

This is just an update about my darling sister in-law who lost her foot and ankle to Diabetes, She has been rescheduled three times for evaluation purposes, and finally had tests performed on her leg three weeks ago. The results of said test were to determine the well being and current state of her leg and in now after that long wait she would have to return to schedule her skin graphs.  Well the day is here she again had the misfortune to loose more of her leg, but this time it was to fortify where the prosthetic would eventually be.

She was kept in the hospital for three full days much to my relief. I am very grateful that the current state of her leg seems to be on it’s way to healing properly, but I worry of others who do not have family to help through this type of ordeal. I have to express that I am also irritated at our health care system.

I know that anyone in this situation just has to grin and bare it. I also know that in today’s’  world the lack of compassion goes hand in hand with just plain apathy for those, that people are not acquainted with directly, this is also something that is more common than not. We all have to strive for those things in our live that we need and want, no one should ever have to strive so hard just to stay alive.

I see a bleak outcome for some of the people in need who I ran across in the waiting room these last couple of months and frankly proclaiming to be humane is not good enough. when you are talking about people, as for my sister in-law I have seen a glimmer in her eyes with the prospect of a prosthesis in sight now I am truly grateful for the turn out and I pray for an overall  healing.

I have traded changing the bandages to another family member for being the designated driver for doctor visits, and someone is taking over that job next week. I am still looking for work and have neglected a lot of household chores and rightly so, but you know how it goes some work is never done
