Valentine’s Day

Oh what a beautiful day it was. It did not start off so well this morning, the kids expressing their differences in very loud tones and fighting over the rights to the TV for tonight! (I mean really the word “tonight” did not set one of them to realize that there was a whole day in front of them.) It wasn’t even 7Am and they were well into the usual of what I guess is normal of kids today. That is not how I saw it, usually they can work it out, but since today St. Valentine’s Day no less Is in my mind meant to express love, sweets, kind thoughts, and most importantly a, if you put your mind to it a great day. Well then it was going to be a great day even if I had to ground everyone from the TV set, and you know what I did! I walked straight into the living room where this very heated (discussion) was going on, and snatched up the remote, clicked the set to off, and announced to everyone that I had “dibbs” on the set for tonight and everyone would have to find something better to do with their day.

The room was quiet I had the floor there wasn’t a noise, not a word, not a creature was stirring (oh yeah that was another story.) I took advantage of the situation and assigned them all a Valentine’s Day task. It was to find the best thing that they could all do together and tell me what it was before breakfast. and I said it in such a tone, that they just cleared the room quickly so by breakfast I was patiently waiting for the topic to come up but it did not, so again I decided to step in and take charge I said “I have an announcement to make and I did not want to be interrupted”, well that got some of them to give me their attention. I said “hey” listen up I want to be clear that I do not want to be interrupted. This time they all looked up I went on to tell them a story of how I had met their DAD and that today was the most special day in our calendar, so that if they could all possibly find an activity for today and give my husband and I some space well then we could have a nice day just the two of us. I know that I heard ewe and other muttering, but it worked they decided to go to the movies (together) and give us our room.

I was good, I mean really, really good with the troubles of late their dad and I had absolutely no plans for this day other than cooking a nice dinner. My husband had to work today so he was not supposed to be home until 7PM, and the kids all called their friends to meet up at the theater so that they could have a group of their own age to watch movies in different theaters. But that was good at least they were going together. Baby steps are how you do it.  Rome was not built in a day you know. They need a reminder that the whole world is busy all of the time and a good time is warranted once in a while. I was very glad that this was a three day weekend for them. The day to day grind always seems to tax them right before Spring break, so this was a very timely weekend right before testing and a view of the break to come.

Turns out they all went to the same movie anyway AVATAR I am glad my oldest can drive he volunteered to cart them all and took them for a bite to eat after the movie. I was surprised when my husband came home early and we went out for a burger (we are still on a tight budget), but I felt like a teenager just he and I, and a burger joint. We ate talked and laughed as if we had just met. I had a great evening. We were already home when he insisted that he wanted to take me to sonic for a desert. I had just changed into some old PJ”s he said it’s a drive through who will know, so we went in our PJ”s no less, I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun, but there we were he in his, and me in mine. We kept laughing all the way home with our desert. My kids came in laughing and wanting to tell us all about the movie and they sounded to have had a really good time. It was a really good day. Oh I can’t seem to find the remote to the television. I guess we will just have to play cards or a board game. Or maybe just talk about our day.
